On Highway 160 between Cortez and Durango, the desert scrub gradually gives way to mountain greenery. The speed limit is 70 miles per hour, but when I was child, it seemed like it took forever.
When I was sixteen and newly licensed, my dad and I made that drive with me at the wheel. He suggested I take the speedometer up to 80 mph to feel what it was like. It was the quickest transition from desert to mountain I had ever experienced.
