Windom Peak is the highest summit of the Needle Mountains range of the Rocky Mountains, located approximately 28 miles north of Durango, Colorado. I did not know the name of Windom Peak growing up in Durango; I saw it whenever we drove to Grand Junction, and that was enough for me.
I never bothered to learn any of the names of the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, which I think is sort of disrespectful. If a peak goes to the trouble of getting itself a name, it is only courteous to learn what it is. Actually that goes for everything that has a name. If someone or something has a name, then it should be used correctly with dignity, honor, and respect.
Note to self: Bill Martin wrote that all children deserve a strong name. Wise man.
