Babel of the Tower

Morro Rock Tower

And it came to pass that the inhabitants of the earth decided to build a tower in order to make a name for themselves. The Lord came down to see the tower, which the sons of men had built.

And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.  Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

“But how shall We do this?  If We merely cause them to speak in other tongues, then their confusion will only be temporary.  Through perseverance, they will eventually overcome all language barriers.  It is inevitable since We have given every newborn the capacity to learn the language of its parents.

“We could remove their ability to speak, but, again, they would find a way to communicate.  Their eyes, their lips, their hands, and their bodies are built to convey unspoken messages.

“Therefore We will allow them their one language and a voice with which to speak it.  In order to confuse them and prevent them from doing too much evil, We will open the floodgates of language.  There will be endless means of communication pouring forth from infinite fountainheads.  Ideas, opinions, interpretations, rumors, suppositions, insinuations, and the like will pile one on top of the other until they reach to the heavens.

“Then let them behold the great tower they have created.  Let them marvel at its width and length and height.  Let them bow beneath its mighty weight and offer their children in sacrifice to its glory.  Let them learn that for all their many words, without Wisdom, all their works are just a pile of rocks.”

(Note to self: Try no to add to the pile of rocks.)
